Our motto expresses our goal to provide a vehicle for important writing that now not only goes
unpublished but often goes unwritten.
It’s no secret that academic and university presses have been struggling to maintain a foothold in the
rapidly changing world of publishing. Print publishing, in particular, is under siege as the Internet
claims a larger share of readers and creates new ways of viewing ideas and information. We will commit
time and resources to vindicate our belief that printed books are a necessity that will find their audiences
for a long time to come—and that new technologies present new opportunities to reach them.
But if books are to succeed, writers and publishers must rethink how best to attract increasingly restive
readers. Central to our plan is to encourage writers to think beyond the traditional exhaustive scholarly
monograph and to publish works that in fewer pages pull together the writer’s themes in prose that
is readable, accessible, informative, new, and, as appropriate, even playful. Books that explore new
developments, consider new ways of thinking about events long past, identify new problems, probe
innovative ways of solving them; books that explain, challenge, hypothesize, and question—these are
the books Tribeca Square Press plans to publish.
During the 2007–2008 academic year, we’ll be refining our plans, testing our assumptions, and laying
the foundations for a startup in 2008–2009. If you have thoughts, questions, or suggestions, we’ll be
happy to talk.
